Setting & Context
My first student teaching placement for eight weeks was located in Laporte, CO at Cache La Poudre Elementary. The school resides in a lower income area where students come from a a variety of backgrounds. 41% of the students are considered low income. Test scores for low income students fall below the state average according to Greatschools.org. The demographics of the school are pretty typical for Colorado. 81% of the school is Caucasian. The next leading race is Hispanic which accounts for 14% of the students. The rest of the population is a mix of two or more races.
The art room is a welcoming, inclusive environment for all learners at CLPE. We provide structure and support for students to learn and thrive. As an IB school, international mindedness and inquiry based learning is our focus when planning lessons. Teaching students our responsibility and impact on the rest of the world is the center of learning within our walls. Our focus on our art projects is around inquiry based learning and creative problem solving. Our art program provides students with the tools and skills to be successful in all classrooms.
Students with special accommodations can still achieve success at CLP Elementary. We provide an integrated services program that adheres to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004). The integrated services room is adjacent to the art room for easily accessed support.
We want to provide students with opportunities for leadership and this is done by placing the responsibility back on the students. As an IB school, we strongly encourage students to manage each other and give them roles that rotate so they learn cooperation and leadership skills. If there is a conflict that can’t be dealt with by the teacher, we have an on site officer that is ready to lend extra support.

Placement Reflection
Something that went well for this placement was my ability to make connections will people right away. Both the students and staff alike welcomed me with open arms. I learned that Elementary students are pretty open and excited to do most art projects I presented. Also, I realized the significance of setting your classroom expectations right away. For future, I would like to try any omissions to my lessons that I have made note of after having taught it. I want to witness the effect of tweaking a lesson and reteaching it to better help students succeed.
